Saggas promotes three projects to offset its carbon footprint

  • The company is participating in three reforestation projects in Teruel, Pontevedra, and Asturias aimed at partially offsetting its carbon footprint.
  • Saggas is also involved in an emissions offsetting project in the Marjal dels Moros.

Saggas has increased its environmental commitment to offset the company’s carbon footprint. In 2023 and 2024, Saggas launched two new carbon offsetting projects in Loureza (Pontevedra) and Ibias (Asturias), which are in addition to the project initiated in 2022 in Ejulve (Teruel).

Specifically, in 2024, Saggas promoted a 16.9-hectare reforestation project in the Asturian town of Ibias, which will allow for a total absorption of 710 tCO2e over its 45-year permanence period. The project involves planting a birch forest, a native species of the area. So far, Saggas has used 129 tCO2e corresponding to the absorption tons available at the beginning of the project to offset part of its Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon footprint for 2023.

Meanwhile, the project in the Galician town of Loureza involves the reforestation of 2.21 hectares of land affected by a forest fire in 2013. This project, which has a 45-year permanence period and a total expected absorption of 1,099 tCO2e, includes the planting of 2,340 Pinus pinaster trees. To date, Saggas has used 66 tCO2e of available absorption at the start of the project to offset 42.04% of its Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint for 2022.

Both projects are in addition to the one launched in 2022 in Ejulve, Teruel, which was used to offset part of the company’s Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon footprint for 2021. In total, the project is expected to absorb 501 tCO2e over a 50-year period. All three projects are registered with the Spanish Office for Climate Change and have enabled the company to obtain the “Calculate, Reduce, and Offset” carbon footprint label for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Offsetting project in the Marjal dels Moros

Saggas also seeks to offset its carbon footprint in its immediate surroundings. In this regard, last October, the company became one of the first three companies to join the pre-sale of carbon credits from the CO2 emissions reduction project in the Marjal dels Moros. The initiative is part of the European LIFE Wetlands4Climate project, coordinated by the Global Nature Foundation, which aims to harness the carbon sink potential of wetlands while improving the biodiversity and resilience of these ecosystems.

The management and restoration project in the Marjal dels Moros will begin in 2025 and will last for 10 years, during which vegetation management and soil restoration actions will be carried out over 75 hectares. These actions are estimated to mitigate a total of 1,517.79 tCO2e over the 10-year duration of the project. With the signing of this agreement, Saggas acquires 20 tCO2e.
