Enagás, Holcim, and Saggas present CO2necta’ to the Valencian Regional Minister of Industry

The project, which will prevent the emission of over 560,000 tons of CO₂ per year, will be submitted to the upcoming call of the European Commission’s Innovation Funds.

The Regional Minister for Innovation, Industry, Trade and Tourism of the Generalitat Valenciana, Marián Cano, visited the Holcim and Saggas facilities in Sagunto today to learn more about the ‘CO2necta’ project, driven by the consortium formed by the two companies and Enagás. The initiative will be submitted to the next call of the Innovation Fund, the European Commission’s program for financing low-carbon innovative technologies.

During the visit, Marián Cano expressed her support for the development of the project, highlighting the “support of Carlos Mazón’s government in promoting this kind of project, which brings so much added value to our companies and our region.” She added, “From the Generalitat, we are committed to advancing industrial decarbonization as a key element of innovation and competitiveness, which is clearly reflected in this project.”

Also present at the visit were the president of the Port Authority of Valencia— which oversees the Port of Sagunto — Mar Chao, the mayor of Sagunto, Darío Moreno, and the Sagunto City Council’s Industry Councillor, Toni Iborra. Representing the companies leading the project were Ricardo de Pablos, CEO of Holcim Spain; Fernando Impuesto, Business Development Director of Enagás; and Santiago Álvarez, General Manager of Saggas.

Ricardo de Pablos, CEO of Holcim Spain, emphasized that “CO2necta is a key project to drive the decarbonization of cement and concrete, and also a growth engine for industry in our country.”

For his part, Enagás’ Business Development Director highlighted that “CO2necta is a pioneering initiative in sustainable CO₂ management in Spain that will place a strategic infrastructure like the Saggas regasification plant in a privileged position in Europe to advance industrial decarbonization efforts.”

‘CO2necta’ is an innovative circular economy project that aims to promote industrial decarbonization through the development of cutting-edge technologies. It will prevent the emission of more than 560,000 tons of CO₂ annually in the Valencian Community through the capture and liquefaction of this gas. The project is a clear example of energy efficiency, as it plans to use the cold generated during the regasification process at Saggas for the liquefaction.

To achieve this, CO2necta includes the development of a CO₂ capture plant at Holcim’s factory, a “ceoduct” by Enagás to transport the gas to the Saggas terminal in the Port of Sagunto, and storage facilities at the regasification plant — 72.5% owned by Enagás — to keep the CO₂ liquefied at -30°C until it is loaded onto ships for final storage.

Collaboration model

The consortium formed by Enagás, Holcim, and Saggas exemplifies collaboration between leading companies committed to industrial transformation and decarbonization. The CO2necta project is based on establishing a comprehensive value chain for the capture, transport, and storage of CO₂.
