22 Jan Enagás, Holcim, and Saggas drive industrial transformation with the pioneering CO2necta project
This innovative circular economy initiative will prevent the emission of over 560,000 tons of CO₂ per year and enable the decarbonization of hard-to-abate strategic sectors.
Enagás, Holcim, and Saggas have announced an agreement for the joint development of an innovative project to decarbonize process CO₂-intensive industry, as part of a technical visit to Sagunto.
The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo; the CEO of Holcim Spain, Ricardo de Pablos; and the General Manager of Saggas, Santiago Álvarez, announced the ‘CO2necta Project’, which will create a comprehensive value chain for the capture, transport, and storage of CO₂ in the Valencian municipality of Sagunto, aiming to avoid the emission of more than 560,000 tons of CO₂ per year in the Valencian Community.
The project will establish a CO₂ capture plant at the Holcim factory in Sagunto. The captured CO₂ will be transported via Enagás infrastructure to the Saggas terminal, located in the Port of Sagunto, where it will undergo a liquefaction process. Once in liquid form, the CO₂ will be transported by ship to its final geological storage site.
Strategic impact and collaboration model
The consortium formed by Enagás, Holcim, and Saggas is based on the establishment of a pioneering circular economy model — the biogenic portion of the captured CO₂ can be used to produce e-methanol and other biofuels — and decarbonization in Sagunto and surrounding areas. CO2necta will boost the local and national economy, especially in hard-to-abate strategic sectors.
CO2necta is an example of collaboration between leading companies committed to industrial transformation and decarbonization through innovative technologies and the creation of a reference value chain for other sectors.
Arturo Gonzalo, CEO of Enagás, emphasized that “this project contributes innovative solutions to jointly advance our decarbonization commitments, especially relevant in hard-to-abate strategic sectors,” and added that “this pioneering project promotes sustainable CO₂ management in Spain and Europe and highlights the value of strategic infrastructures like Saggas to lead industrial decarbonization, enhancing the competitiveness of the sector.”
In this regard, Ricardo de Pablos, CEO of Holcim Spain, stressed that “industrial decarbonization requires cross-sector alliances and projects that develop the CO₂ value chain, with transport infrastructure and logistics hubs to foster economies of scale, making the transformation of industry possible.”
During the visit, Arturo Gonzalo and Ricardo de Pablos toured the Saggas Liquefied Natural Gas terminal — 72.5% owned by Enagás — and the Holcim factory in Sagunto, key infrastructures in the value chain envisaged by the project.
